SPACE FOR THE SELF

My City Dreamspace

Project 3 - To design a dreamspace for the self interrpetation or a character of choice while exploring narrative and spatial design. Also, to experiment with notions and effects of materials and the senses.

I created a character I titled; "The Bipolar Musician" for this project, believing that it would give me the artistic freedom as well as the experience I needed. I wanted to incorproate a notion of real life into an abstracted yet functional form of art, simply because I wanted the art to have a legible meaning to it. By designing this home for an emotionally inflicted character, I was able to discover the many facets and nuances of the connection between a state of mind and design opportunities. My dreamspace was designed to mask and protect yet also to eventually help and become a healing process by manipulating visuals and the link between visual perceptions and psychological state. Utilizing private and public spacing, levels and lighting, the design enables the character to address and disguise his insecurities through spatial translation and light therapy and as he explores the space he will gain a deeper understanding of himself and acceptance will be the first step to recovery. Thusly the space is named 'The Sanctuary'.
